When this book was published Amiria Stirling was more than 80 years old and in it she recalls her early life on the East Coast, as well as her later years experiences. Her story was related to Anne Salmond in a series of tape recorded interviews which were translated into print, while retaining Amiria's narrative style. In her childhood, she lived in a raupo hut with her grandmother, and also experienced the relative grandure and European trappings in the household on the Williams family property. The story tarkes readers through Amiria's younger days, up to the time of her "arranged" marriage to Eruera Stirling in 1918, through their married life and farming on the "Coast" and World War II before she and husband Eruera moved to Auckland, where they became leaders in the Maori community, with their home a focal point. Apart from the autobiographical aspect, Amiria's story contains details of East Coast Maori lore and traditions with particular insights into their beliefs and culture. "Amiria" was a prize winner in the 1977 NZ Book of the Year Awards.
