Ken G Collins

In 1922, as a fourteen year old . Ken Collins heard the first sounds from a majic box called wireless. Like many New Zealanders he was captivated.

While still at school he worked for a private station in Palmerston North, and always observant and always enthralled by broadcasting, he now recalls his forty years of service as announcer, engineer and manager under six heads of broadcasting and four types of organization

During the war years the author was responsible for broadcasting from Parliament House – and these chapters touching on wartime security, anxieties & humour are among the most fascinating in a well documented personal history of broadcasting on New Zealand.

Ken Collins’ experiences in Fiji, where he was responsible for setting up a three language broadcasting service, reveal yet another aspect of broadcasting.

Formerly undocumented “broadcasting boobs” make a light hearted tail piece to a book, which as pioneer announcer, Clive Drummond points out in his foreword, will bring back happy memories to thousands of listeners
