"One hundred years ago, on 28 September 1870, the first meeting of the Wellington Borough Council was held. This book records a century's progress in Wellington, and the achievements of its citizens in various spheres. WELLINGTON PROSPECT, however, is more than the history of the past century. It delves deep into the past, with Professor Beaglehole writing of the difficulties Captain Cook encountered when he was in the strait; with Mrs de Vries recording problems of the first surveyors. It also considers many aspects of the current scene and in so doing it offers a glance at the future. The illustrations are by Rodger Harrison, well known Wellington artist who has won the Kelliher Art Competition on two occasions. His drawings capture the moments of the past and of the present, and fully complement the text."
