The Intervening Years A New Zealand Account of the Years Between the Last Two Visits of Halley's Comet

Begg, Neil

'The years between the visit from Halley's comet in 1910 and its reappearance in 1986 chart the life of a remarkable New Zealander. Neil Begg's account of these years begins with his Scottish immigrant forebears and concludes with a bi-cultural family gathering. The intervening years explore such events as two world wars, depressions, hunger in children, the advantages of citizen participation, the techniques of preventive medicine, discoveries in Fiordland and the importance of a bi-cultural future. The author includes extracts from his father's Gallipoli diaries kept while serving as Senior Medical Officer at Anzac Cove in World War 1, and later extracts from his own World War II diary which display the striking similarity in tone, that of non-combatant doctors and their abhorrence at the carnage and waste of young lives. Neil Begg also gives a wonderfully evocative account of a period spent on the Chatham Islands in the 30s; a fascinating portrait of the founder of the Plunket Society, Sir Truby king; and an insightful view of the Historic Places trust and its Maori Advisory Committee'
