This two-volume set by John Lediard Nicholas, Narrative of a Voyage to New Zealand, was written after a visit in 1814-15 in company of his friend, the Reverend Samuel Marsden, principal chaplain of New South Wales, who first brought Christianity here.

They travelled in the brig Active on his first trip to these shores.

Nicholas recorded his impressions of the Bay of Islands and Thames districts and their potentialities, and of their war-like inhabitants.

He also put on record intimate glimpses of the pioneer missionary during their four-month trip.

Nicholas, a former London iron-founder, returned to England in 1815 and died there in 1868.

His book did much to bring New Zealand to the attention of the world.

First published in London in 1817, it was translated into Dutch and German in 1819.
