Presbyterians in Aotearoa 1840-1990
Editor: Dennis McEldowney

Contains numerous photos throughout.

As 1990 approached, five scholars saw that it was time for a new history of Presbyterians in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

It was also time for a different kind of history. Previous historians had focused on the triumphs of the Church. This one would not ignore the failures, the controversies, the ambiguities. It would look at the Church in its social context and in its local setting, as well as chronicling its organisations and national figures.

The five authors each narrated thirty years of the Church's life. Although they made no attempt to disguise their personal styles and points of view, this is not a collection of individual essays but a continuing story.

It is the story of a settlers’ Church 'the Scotch kirk', which looked back to its homeland with nostalgia. A Church, male dominated, largely uninterested in the original people of the land they had come to, but with a heroic determination to provide for the spiritual needs of the most remote communities.

And it is the story of an evolution into an indigenous body with significant Maori and Pacific Island components, which has committed itself to be a just home for women.

An abundance of pictures, informative captions, and mini-essays on particular themes further enliven the book.
