Dreamers of the Day: A history of Auckland’s regional parks
By Graeme Murdoch

From Te Arai and Pakiri in the north, the Waitakere Ranges in the west, Mahurangi in the east to the Hunuas in the south - the Auckland regional parks network spreads across the region.

The network was first envisaged by visionary planners and regional politicians who were aware that the nearest national parks lay some 400 kilometres from Auckland. They were anxious to provide outdoor areas for the city's rapidly growing population, and also to protect the region's outstanding coastal landscapes from suburban sprawl.

This beautifully illustrated book is the story of the origin and evolution of the network and celebrates the value and history of these glorious public spaces. A legacy project from the Auckland Regional Council, it is rich with the personal and public stories associated with these parks. They are unique places to be enjoyed, respected and conserved. The book's stunning images, both historical and contemporary, bring them to life.

Graeme Murdoch currently works as a historic heritage consultant, having previously worked as Historian and then Director of Heritage at the Auckland Regional Council from 1988 to 2006.
