To the increasingly asked question, “What happens when the natives learn to read anthropology?” this monograph offers an answer: a few will become excellent ethnog- raphers. Of course, Mr. Hohepa is but continuing the New Zealand Maori tradition of producing good anthropologists; he is not continuing-thankfully-the sentimental glorification that has sometimes colored Maori studies, whether done by Maori or Pakeha. This is no mean tribute to Hohepa’s competence since he is not only a Maori, but also a member by childhood residence and continuing kinship of the community he studied in 1958-1959. He acknowledges both the dangers and benefits of his position; he capitalized on the latter.
