The Settlement of New Plymouth. This is a record of historical interest describing the origin and aims of the organisers of the expeditions to establish colonists at New Plymouth. It is perhaps of greater human interest in revealing the conditions that prevailed and the courage and fortitude displayed by the pioneers. The majority of the settlers were country folk and artisans, not accustomed to putting thoughts to paper, consequently personal records available are few and fragmentary. Fortunately, it has been possible to include extracts from the manuscript papers of Dr Henry Weekes, Surgeon-Superintendent of the "Wm. Bryan", the first ship to sail to New Plymouth. Passenger lists of the from the records of the Company. Other persons arriving in the settlement by coastal vessels from 1841 — 1860, have been traced as completely as possible from newspapers and other sources. Contents include: A Brief Account of Dr. Henry Weeks, Letter of Instructions to Dr. H Weeks, Voyage in the barque “William Bryan” from Plymouth to New Zealand 1840-41, Journal During Residence at New Plymouth, First Establishment of the New Plymouth Colony, Pioneering etc, Progress of the Colony at Taranaki and appendices to Weeks’ Journals, My Island, Voyage of the Barque “Amelia Thompson”, The Voyage of the “Regina”, Voyage of the “Ship Oriental”, Voyage of the ship Timandra, Voyage of the ship Blenhiem, Voyage of the Ship “Essex”, Early Statistics, Passenger Lists.
