Travelling to New Zealand An Oxford Anthology is the first comprehensive collection of writing by travellers to New Zealand. It illustrates the joys and tediums, perils and pleasures of travelling to and within New Zealand since the early nineteenth century. Lydia Wevers presents diverse glimpses of what New Zealand might have looked, smelled, and tasted like to a visitor from another time and place. During the nineteenth century, as foreign travel became less arduous and more generally accessible, travel for pleasure became popular, and a sense of arriving in an exotic new world moved many a Victorian tourist to take up a pen. Extracts from private travel diaries intended for circulation among family and Friends appear alongside accounts by such famous travellers as Anthony Trollope, Mark Twain, and Paul Theroux appear. Humorous and descriptive accounts of travel on and off New Zealand roads are included, as are those of sojourns in hotels and bush inns, and travel by ship in settler ships and tourist ships from the 1880’s to the 1930’s. Particularly engrossing are accounts of the cultural encounter with the Maori and the Grand Tours of the 1880s, taking in the astounding beauty of New Zealand’s scenery. Indeed, this anthology proves that every traveller has a story to tell. Scathing attacks on New Zealand as a ‘rough, rude, uncivilised, pretentious and uncomfortable’ find space next to heartfelt declarations of having found a ‘regular paradise’. It is this mixture of vitriol and praise that makes Travelling to New Zealand: An Oxford Anthology a highly amusing and enthralling read. Please click here to ask a question
