Frederick Aloysius Weld (1823-91) was a pioneer pastoralist in the Wairarapa and Marlborough districts of New Zealand. He was an explorer in the New Zealand back country, and hair-raisingly, on an active Hawaiian volcano, Mauna Loa. He was a water-colour painter of some ability and charm. He was elected to the first New Zealand parliament in 1854 and was Premier in 1854-5. Subsequently he came a colonial govenor in Western Australia, Tasmania, and Straits Settlement (Malaya). Each of these phases of his life is worth telling.

Jeanine Graham has aimed to produce a readable biography with the accuracy and assurance but not too many of the trappings of scholarship.

There are twenty-three illustrations, many of them reproduced from watercolours by Frederick Weld himself, and a section of maps.
