A social history of the New Zealand Shoebridge family, descendants of Henry Shoebridge who was born in Kent in 1827. It tells about the decision of a working-class family to emigrate, and about their life in the colony. The book gives an account of pioneering life in Wellington, Christchurch, Auckland, and North Auckland. The author is a descendant of early English settlers and of Ngatiwai. Her book is based on oral history and on research in libraries and archives. There are many photographs and reproductions of documents illustrating the text.
