A Centennial History of Tauranga by W H Gifford & H B Williams

Illustrated hard cover book in very good condition - Capper Press, 1976, facsimile reprint published for The Tauranga Centennial Committee - 351 pages - b/w photographs - map

The rich material collected from diaries, letters and conversations with early settlers vividly portrays the life and hardships of the settlement of Tauranga. This centennial history, with numerous anecdotes and a wealth of information provides insights into the personalities and atmosphere in Tauranga up to 1882.

Progress in early Tauranga was hindered by the fear of marauding bloodthirsty tribes, but the unrelenting work of the missionaries and the establishment of mission schools did much to promote trust and friendship between the Maori and pakeha. Peace was finally established in 1845. After the surrender of arms surveying was able to begin in earnest. The settlement suffered a severe setback in 1853 with the Gate Pa and Te Ranga incidents, but by 1872 it was possible to travel 5 miles in safety and the flow of commerce resumed. The wave of Hauhau is detailed; many of the settlers are named, their families traced and the land they owned and farmed described. Please click here to ask a question
