This book is more than a reprint of "Harbour at the Sugar Loaves" published in 1975 to mark the centennial of Board control. That is why I have chosen to give this volume a new name: "Port Taranaki: 115 Years of Elected Control". This history includes many new illustrations and the story of Maui A and Motunui encompassing two of New Zealand's greatest engineering projects. Welcoming the 1975 book the then Chairman of the Board, Mr Stuart D. Hayton in a foreword praised "the loyalty and unification of all parts of the province as a factor in the modem development of the port". Little did he, or anyone else, imagine that 14 years later a well tried electoral system would be set aside in favour of a commercially oriented company approved by the Government. True, as this book demonstrates, Board control at certain periods dithered and lacked firm leadership. But it soon recovered the purpose shared by Board Members and public alike: the achievement of a deepwater harbour of national importance. Today this service is breaking records in the realm of energy. There will be more challenges: development of the Maui B project, new onshore oil discoveries, and more industries based on scientific use of natural gas. Successive Boards have shared the Moturoa area with the public. Port Taranaki still looks, and is, a genial harbour with a reduced but appreciated public access. A commercialised corporation hopefully will not squander this goodwill. Nature gave to Taranaki its glorious Egmont National Park the other heritage, Port Taranaki, was won by human endeavour.
