Foote Prints Among The Kauri By Bill Haigh
Foote Prints Among The Kauri is the story of the lives and times of seven brothers and six sisters, and the kauri timber industry around them.
In the 1890's, after milling at Whananaki and Maungatapere, near Whangarei, the partnership of Foote Bros felled and milled thousands of burnt and green kauri trees from the great Puhipuhi forest.
With their energy and innovation they paved the way for the use of steam-powered traction engines and log haulers in the Northland bush and led the establishment of the Whangarei Engineering Company.
Sisters Foote were amongst New Zealand's earliest nurses, playing a leading role during the formative years of the profession and through World War I.
The book tells of the family's early days in Newfoundland, emigration to New Zealand in a small brigantine, and the establishment of one of the country's first steam-powered saw mills, near the Manukau Heads.
The lives of the thirteen children of William and Elizabeth Foote are traced around Northland as they touch Whananaki and Whangaruru, Maungatapere and Whangarei, Herekino and Hokianga.
The book looks back from today at changing attitudes to the exploitation of the kauri forests and guides the reader to the sites of some early mills and the signs from the past.
