To early settlers by the river it was their only source of water supply until seven artesian wells were sunk in Christchurch in 1864. It was to the Avon that the Christchurch Fire Brigade turned when faced with the problem of extinguishing fires. From mills on the Avon bakers obtained flour to make bread. And in this river butchers washed down their carts and watered their horses. Cart-loads of water used to be taken from it to allay the dust on the city thoroughfares; and from its inner city reaches delighted anglers once took basketfuls of trout. Rowing clubs built boat sheds on its banks ...
