The Red and the Gold
By Stanley Roche

An informal account of the Waihi Strike, 1912

'Remember Waihi, remember Waihi’ In the closing weeks of 1912 the slogan was flung at audiences in halls and lecture rooms throughout New Zealand.

To those who had taken part in the Waihi struggle, no matter on which side they fought, the plea must have seemed quite unnecessary. Who could possibly forget those dramatic, traumatic months and their terrible culmination? But we are not a people who cherish our history.

On Tuesday 12 November, 1912, in Waihi, a man fired at a police constable, wounding him in the stomach. The constable struck down the man he believed to be his assailant with a blow from his baton. Then a mob attacked the fallen man kicking and beating him. He died of his injuries.

Mobs armed with batons, and sometimes guns, went around the town giving notice to various householders - they and their families had forty-eight hours to get out of town or they must take the consequences. It was the sixth month of the Waihi strike - the miners' union versus the overseas-owned goldmining company.

Gold and silver, danger and death, socialism, patriotism and violence were elements in the explosion at Waihi. This book attempts to trace the history of that explosion..
