From introduction to 1996 edition: “The earlier introduction (1976) has been retained for its historical and factual details which are still relevant. The first edition of this booklet recorded 274 commemorative pieces; this latest edition has 380 pieces, a 40% increase in numbers of new types or varieties. In 1976 it was predicted that “new issues will undoubtedly be brought to light”, however, that there should be such a large number is surprising to the author, and far exceeds the expected increase. Having accumulated information on known pieces over the last 35 years I am lead to the conclusion that the majority of the pieces are far rarer than the Waitangi crown. Many of the pieces are indeed thought to be of extreme rarity with under 10 being known. The most frequently found piece for instance, the 1907 Dominion Day medal has a recorded issue of 170,000 which is a mintage comparable to the ten lowest mintages of New Zealand coins. But when the fact that there are five varieties of that medal is taken into consideration it compares with the 1940 Centennial Commemorative Half Crown.” – Leon G. Morel
