No Right to Strike
By David McGill

The History of the New Zealand Police Service Organisations

The New Zealand Police have no right to strike. In their first century of service they had no right to organise and were condemned to the status of state serfs. Since they were permitted to organise in 1936 they have moved at a remarkable rate from the bottom to the top of the industrial relations ladder. This is the story of how they did it.

The story is told through official records and memoranda, personal letters and newspapers of the day and, perhaps most revealingly, in the words of participants such as Murray and Moodie. The story concludes with the perspective of those who led the 1990 protest march of 1200 police on Parliament, an unprecedented act symbolic of the solidarity that has made the police the swiftest success story in our industrial relations history.
