Winemakers of New Zealand
By Dick Scott

A Spaniard who bought. grapes by the canoe-load from Wanganui River Maoris and won medals in London and Melbourne with the wines he made; a German who used puriri slabs and a timber jack for a wine press at Hokianga and justified a promise to `equal the best on the Rhine' by winning Prizes for hack and receiving a visit from the governor; a Wairarapa sheep-farmer's son who had his labourers tread grapes by the ton for the edification of his French wife and so started a fashionable interest in winemaking among his wealthy neighbours these are three memorable portraits from a rich gallery of characters unearthed by Dick Scott in his researches for this history of New Zealand's wine industry.

This book celebrates the final triumph for the first settlers' vision off good wine available for every family table. Entering a field hitherto unexplored it throws new light on the making of New Zealand.
