Comparatively Speaking: Studies in Pacific Material Culture 1921 - 1972
By Henry Devenish Skinner

Comparatively Speaking is one man's approach to the study of Oceanic culture history. In these eleven papers, Dr Skinner explores some of the fascinating aspects of Polynesia's material culture and again demonstrates the significant contribution he has made to anthropological studies in New Zealand. Each of Polynesia's sub-areas had individual character but Dr Skinner emphasizes that there is a fundamental alliance throughout. Using New Zealand and Pacific material, and the comparative method, he advances stimulating suggestions and arguments on the origin and relation ships of Polynesian material culture, and the reasons for regional variation.

Five of these papers are new; some were written in collaboration with other scholars. But all display Dr Skinner's depth of visual examination and skill of description. The work of the editors who have brought this extensive selection together has been unobtrusive. With some 600 line drawings and many halftones as well as beautiful colour plates, this is a visually exciting work appealing to specialist and layman.
