'The men who settled in the back country of 19th century NZ went out into the wilderness because they wanted to. But, their wives and daughters had no option but to go with their men, and it is of these women that Miriam Macgregor has writen. She has compiled personal studies of 54 women of the Wairarapa, Hawke's Bay and Poverty Bay areas and they include Pakeha, British and Scandanavian, married women and single, educated and barely literate, well-to-do and poorly off- a wide and representative cross-section of the period that begins with Elizabeth Colenso (1821-1904) and goes on into the 20th century when the last of these petticoat pioneers reached life's end'
