A Very Good Copy. SCARCE.
'Over some sixteen years the late J D H Buchanan collected a mass of information and several volumes of references to Maori place names in Hawke's Bay. He made intensive study of all available sources of local tradition, the elders of the district, family genealogies, Maori Land Court records, early survey maps and so on. He prepared meticulous plans of pa sites and had sites photographed from the air. The result is a regional history invaluable as a study of Maori culture and as a permanent record of people and place names that have been known- since early times. And as a practical guide it is unsurpassed: the twenty-two fully-displayed maps, in which place names are pinpointed by a comprehensive gazetteer (giving grid numbers), make this a reference book that will be in constant use' SCRARCE.
