In 1868 of the 26,000 men on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand were Irish born and 90 percent of these Catholic. 10 percent of the Irishmen on the Coast were Orangemen, or protestants. There had already been an incident involving some Irishmen at Okarito in 1865. Two newspapers The West Coast Times and The New Zealand Celt representing the orange and the green respectively were a stones throw from each other in Revell Street, Hokatika and the editors were antagonistic towards one another. English and Irish had come to blows with each other in Arahura in March 1867. Political happenings in Ireland, the rallying of 6,000 armed men in Ireland and the countering of this by the English and arrest of the leaders, followed by hold up in Manchester to rescue those detained made news in New Zealand but not until February of 1868. Active preparations were made by two supporters of the Irish movement to mount a protest in New Zeland, Father William Joseph Larkin and journalist John Manning. Headings include: The Irish Connection, The Disturbancesm The Mock Funeral, The Morning After, When Irish Eyes Were Smiling, God Save the Prince!, The Stand-Off, Arrest, Troops and Trial Commitments, Riot!, The Newspaper War, The Prosecution of the Procession, The Damning of the Defence, Seditious Sentences, Aftermath: The Irish Revolution, Appendices – Notes, extracts etc. As part of our goldfield and migrant history this book is now scarce.
