Nurses of Auckland By Margaret Brown, Diana Masters & Barbara Smith
The History of the General Nursing Programme in the Auckland School of Nursing
The Auckland School of Nursing was founded on traditions developed by Florence Nightingale. The ethos of devotion to duty, dedication and self-sacrifice inherited from the Nightingale system meant that for many years student nurses worked long hours for meagre pay and were subjected to strict regimentation and discipline.
Nevertheless, nearly 9000 nurses completed the three-year training through sheer determination, perseverance and stamina. Their sense of humour and enjoyment of the camaraderie with classmates makes this a history of fun and laughter. The historical facts are well illustrated by photographs, cartoons and anecdotes.
This story is not only about nurses but follows conditions of employment for women and men in the 107 years of the school's existence.
