This volume of 'The Dictionary of New Zealand Biography' records the lives of more than 600 people who made their mark between 1870 and 1900. These people - and not only those who make a roll-call of the famous - will give the reader an insight into the rich diversity of New Zealand life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The turmoil and violence of the early nineteenth century gave way to a rapid expansion of settlement. Maori were large overwhelmed by the growth of the European population. Protests over land and resources continued, however, through Maori representation in Parliament and through movements such as Te Kotahitanga. Their stories are told in the biographies of eighty-four Maori, both men and women.

Jointly published by Bridget Williams Books Ltd and The Department of Internal Affairs in 1993.

Large format heavy book (with dust jacket) - 664 pages
