MISSION TO THE RIVER HUTT - A HISTORY OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN THE HUTT VALLEY 1850-2000

by B.J. Cullinane

This is the story of the Catholic Church in the Hutt Valley founded in 1850 as a Mission alongside the eastern banks of the Hutt River in the heart of today's Lower Hutt City. The original Mission territory extended over the Western Hills of the Valley to the Coast, and through to the Wairarapa.

It is at the same time, the story of pioneer settlers and their families from the British Isles, their descendants and others, seeking to live out their Catholic Faith. As in every community, there were the characters and personalities and among the latter, one who owned and farmed forty-six acres of Woburn and gave that suburb its name. They were aided for more than a full generation by intrepid French priests who forsook the ordered life of their homeland, for the hardships and privations of life in an alien British colony in the South Pacific. Here they preached the Gospel and ministered both to the Maori inhabitants and the growing influx of European settlers. They lived lives of frugal simplicity, even austerity, without the solace of a family life - an inspiration to all who read about them.

The development of the three schools and the many organisations whether purely spiritual or otherwise, which have contributed to today's modern urban parish are included in the narrative. Many interesting and some historic photographs are spread through the pages.
