Hard-back very good condition with dust jacket scuffing and shelf wear to edges

Reed 1969 Reprinted
Nan Bowie
ISBN589002198 196 Pages

The life and times of Mick Bowie, Mount Cook's leading mountain guide. During his 40 year career he saw the Hermitage and Mt Cook transform from a place for a few wealthy tourists to an international tourist destination. Bowie pioneered many of the mountain guiding practices still in place in New Zealand today. Previous owner's signature front endpaper, dustjacket worn.

In his early days at the Hermitage, mountaineering was the recreation of the well-to-do, escorted by professional guides, of whom Mick was one ; skiing was in its infancy ; amateur climbing had hardly begun ; short-term tourist parties were undreamed of.

From 1929 to 1958 Mick Bowie was first a junior guide, graduating to Chief Guide and a trainer of guides, and since 1958 he has been conducting glacier parties on day trips from the Hermitage.

His 40-year span of service has covered the developing period of a great alpine resort and has brought days of epic climbs, of desperately hazardous rescue work, of long stretches of grim endurance - and of warm friendships and high comedy.

... Those climbers and trampers who, today, enjoy the splendid services of tracks and huts and guiding available in the Mount Cook area will discover, in these pages, how much they owe to the selfless, continuing work of Mick Bowie and his wife.
