Description
In 1987 the New Zealand Forest Service was wound-up as part of a Government programme to re-structure and rationalise many of its departments. In its 65 year of existence the Service presided over a tremendous programme of exotic forest plantings throughout the country, which not only sustained national requirements but also provided valuable export earnings through different forest products. However, its responsibilities were much wider, including conservation, animal pest control, forestry research and development. The three co-authors/compilers, all had long careers in the Service and carried out the task of collecting contributions, anecdotes and illustrations for this valuable history, while providing much of the background text. Written by Lt-Col H.A. Reid, published by Whitcombe & Tombs Ltd 1923, 567pp, linen hard covers, b&w photos John Halkett, Peter Berg and Brian Mackrel compilers/co-authors, published by the New Zealand Forestry Corporation Ltd, undated c1991, 156pp, s/c, b&w photos.
