Description
edited by H B Hewitt. Foreword and Epilogue By John Pascoe. In Dust Jacket sl rubbed edges, end paper maps, frontispiece map, Black and White Plates, First Edition 1965, 245 Pages, previous owners name on front end paper, Published By Reed Wellington. A Very Good Plus Copy 'Peter Graham's service as Head Guide at Hermitage, Mount Cook, coincided with the first flowering of New Zealand alpine climbing, 1894-1928. He made many first-climbs of the great peaks of the central Southern Alps, and these alone earn him a great name in New Zealand mountaineering; but his work as a professional guide, founding a tradition of care and safe-conduct for the parties he led, is an equally important contribution to the sport. Added to this he was a big and lovable but a deeply respected figure. Graham was a man of Westland, born in a little mining settlement south of Okarito. One of the most delightful features of this book is his account of his childhood in this place; it does much to explain the strength, integrity, and gentle kindliness which won him such admiration as Mount Cook's great Chief Guide' Classic New Zealand Mountaineering History.
