Fast Light Boats: A century of Kiwi innovations By Grahame Anderson
For a century, New Zealand sailors have been designing, building, and sailing fast light boats - boats that will plane. The story begins with the Logan Brothers' famous Patikis, built to race on the Waitemata Harbour in the last years of the nineteenth century, and culminates in the world-beating designs of Bruce Farr, Laurie Davidson, and others. In true Kiwi fashion, the process of innovation has mostly been carried out by amateurs - sailors keen to build a faster boat for next season. They have taught themselves design and boat-building skills out in the back shed, and then learned to sail their new light boats in equally innovative ways, always pursuing speed on the water.
For generations, Kiwi sailors have started out as kids racing P-class boats. Whether they progressed through the one-design classes of Zeddies, Idle Alongs, and Xies, experimented with R-class or Q-class boats, or got into Optimists, Lasers and 470s, they have honed their skills out on the water, and discovered what makes boats sail fast.
This book tells the story of fast light boats in New Zealand: of the designers, builders, sailors, boats, and clubs whose ideas and enthusiasm have made a difference to the way the world sails.
