'88-seater twinset articulated railcars popularly termed the "Fiats" because of the origin of their engines, were introduced to New Zealand in 1955 and for over two decades dominated long-distance passenger train services in New Zealand, particularly in the North island where they were at various times used over the whole network, except on freight-only branch lines. The golden era was doomed however. Provincial passenger services were losing money and in 1967 came the decision to curtail railcar services and replace them with buses. Some centres lost their railcars straight away, others over the next 10 years. In some cases railcars were replaced them locomotive-hauled trains, but in other cases the end of the railcars was the end of rail passenger services. This book is dedicated to the memory of the Fiats, for so many people once the identity symbol of New Zealand Railways'
