Eight Minutes Past Midnight: The wreck of the s.s. Wairarapa
By Steve Locker-Lampson & Ian Francis

Eight Minutes Past Midnight is the story of the wrecking of the Union Steamship Company's s.s. Wairarapa at Miners Head, Great Barrier Island in the early morning of 29th October 1894 with the loss of approximately 130 lives. The history of the vessel before she was wrecked as well as the later salvage operations, recollections of survivors and requests for information almost up to the present day are included in the text.

Steve Locker-Lampson and Ian Francis have spent two years sifting through archival material in an endeavour to learn the truth behind the inexplicable wrecking of the Wairarapa but some of the mystery still remains.

Eight Minutes Past Midnight is illustrated by many contemporary black and white photographs as well as more recent colour pictures of the wreck site, the underwater remains and some of the artefacts recovered over the last two decades. Plans of the ship and maps are also included.
