Out in the Cold
By David Grant

Pacifists and Conscientious Objectors in New Zealand during World War II

It is not widely known that hundreds of New Zealanders spent World War II in prison or detention camps - surrounded by cell walls or barbed wire, watched over by guards, frustrated by meaningless labour and worn down by boredom - in their own country. Ironically, while New Zealand soldiers fought alongside other Allies overseas to defend democracy, pacifists and conscientious objectors at home were being punished for defending their right to oppose war.

These men were out in the cold, both figuratively and literally. The Government was angry at their stand and public opinion ran strongly against them.

Historian David Grant has researched archives and conducted numerous interviews to tell the story of those who refused, for religious, humanitarian or political reasons, to participate in the war effort. With more than 100 illustrations, including many rare pamphlets and posters, Out in the Cold brings to light a little discussed but significant aspect of our history.
