Against the Rising Sun: New Zealanders remember the Pacific War
Edited by Megan Hutching

Sometimes called `the forgotten war', the Pacific War focused New Zealand's attention on its role as a Pacific nation. Close contact with the American forces, and the use of nuclear bombs to end the war, also heralded a new era in international relations.

The Pacific War was distinctive. Fighting in the jungle, flying during tropical storms and, towards the end, being subject to the attentions of kamikaze pilots made it very different from the war in Europe. It was also closer to home and protecting loved ones loomed large in the minds of those involved.

Men from all sectors of New Zealand's armed forces served in the Pacific. Against the Rising Sun tells the stories of men in the infantry, Divisional Signals, Provosts (military police), Army Service Corps, from a naval radar operator, two seamen (one still a boy), and air crew from bomber squadrons, fighter squadrons, air ground crew and reconnaissance squadrons.

The landing at Mono Island (New Zealand troops' first opposed amphibious landing since Gallipoli), bombing Japanese installations, kamikaze attacks, life as a prisoner of war in Japan - all these stories contribute to the rich and fascinating history of New Zealanders at war in the Pacific.
