A New Zealander much of his command experience was in Motor Launhes, Motor Gunboats and Fairmiles. The Royal Navy's small ships, the motor torpedo boats, motor gunboats, steam gunboats and motor launches of Coastal Forces, fought seven hundred and eighty actions in European waters during the Second World War. The main purpose of these high-speed craft was to seek out and attack enemy coastal shipping but they were also used in many other roles. Operating mainly at night so as to gain the advantage of surprise, they laid and swept mines, escorted convoys, transported troops and supplies, raided harbours and landed secret agents on remote beaches. They were manned almost entirely by civilian volunteers, many of them dashing individualists who in peacetime had been yachtsmen or motor boat enthusiasts. Geoffrey Hobday, a New Zealander, was one of this special breed. His exciting and fast-moving story starts in 1940 when, not long after being commissioned in the RNVR, lie bought. a captured French prize into Gibraltar. As captain of a motor launch based on the East Coast he experienced at first hand the grim and unrelenting struggle for control of the North Sea and the English Channel waged against the formidable German E-boats. Later he commanded a motor gunboat in the Mediterranean, taking part in many important operations. In 1944, shortly before his service in Coastal Forces ended, he rescued a noted E-boat flotilla leader after an action in the North Sea. In Harm's Way is a forthright and lively account of a relatively unfamiliar aspect of naval warfare and will appeal to all who have a taste for adventure.
