Doing Our Bit New Zealand Women Tell Their Stories of World War Two Edited by Jim Sullivan, Published by Harper Collins, 2002, Softcover, Pgs 238, b&w photos.

Condition: Near new, no markings or inscriptions within, clean and tidy throughout.

Fifty New Zealand Women tell their stories - For most people the Second World War conjures up images of khaki-clad soldiers on the beaches of France, of Spitfires winging towards Germany, of destroyers powering through oceans in search of enemy vessels. But behind the scenes there were other, no less vital, wartime occupations, filled by women from all walks of life. Doing Our Bit tells the stories of fifty such women who were involved in everything from nursing wounded soldiers, to sending up barrage balloons, and running the social clubs so essential to keeping up the morale of the soldiers. They include the woman who eavesdropped on secret Japanese messages, the Wren who trained men on naval guns, and the Woof who ended up delivering Spitfires to military airfields. The experience of these women mirrored that of so many men: torn from their daily existence, flung into an unfamiliar environment, and then, when the war finished, expected to return to their old roles as though nothing had happened. Their fascinating stories offer a unique perspective on the Second World War.
