The Battle of Alam Haifa was Rommel's final thrust for the Nile. Alamein was the beginning of the Allies' riposte that led to the landings in North Africa, Italy and Normandy. In the few autumn weeks of 1942 the blitzkrieg ran its course, giving
way to the war of attrition, the war of material. Although this volume has been written to record the part taken by the 2nd New Zealand Division, led by General Frey-berg, its scope is wide enough to offer some illustration of the changing face of war. The plans and tactics of the Allied and Axis armies are analysed as the story leads from the patrols and raids of the trench warfare of August 1942, through the two major battles, and on to the chase of the Panzer Army over the frontier of Egypt. Contents include: Chronology; The Opposing Armies; The Alam El Halfa Defences; The Days of Decision; Axis and Allied Raids; Patrols and Raids; Rommel's Offensive Opens; The Battle Develops; Withdrawal of the Panzer Army; Operation Beresford; Enemy Counter-Attacks; Summary of the Battle; The Uncombined Operations; Preparations for the Offensive; The Development of the Plans; The Eve of the Offensive; 30 Corps' Plans; 13 Corps' Plans; 10 Corps' Plans; Comparative Strengths; Advance by 30 Corps; The Battle is Joined; 13 Corps' Operations; Dawn, 24 October; The Break-Out Fails; Tanks Attempt Night Advance; Montgomery Changes Direction of Attack; The Fourth Day of Battle; Australians Keep the Initiative; Australians Under Counter-Attack; Operation Supercharge; The End of the 'Dog-Fight'; The Pursuit; Halfaya Pass;
