Soldier Sailor
AWOL on the high seas in World War 2

Trevor Davis

Trev's war was no ordinary war. On army leave in Egypt, he hitched a ride on a Norwegian tanker for a few days which turned into years in the merchant navy. Beginning with a colourful account of growing up in the King Country with its timber mill rugby teams, gravedigging, slygrogging, and looping the loop in a Gypsy Moth the book moves on to dramatic battles such as Minqar Qaim and El Alamein. When Trev went accidentally AWOL his adventures began on a broader canvas. Torpedoed in the Indian Ocean, surviving the VBomb blitz in London, high jinx in the New York Anzac Club, convoying armaments to Murmansk. Finally Trev stowed away on a ship to come home and face court martial, and get on with life. 'Little wonder that when we returned home to our families and were asked by our children: 'What happened to you in the war, Dad?' we stayed silent. Now I am writing my story because it should be told to this generation before we all die. And before the true story is lost forever. But it is hard for me; my memories make my tears wet the paper. I am writing about all my wonderful mates, and the folly of war, as they did not return.'
