Notes on the Art of War
By Elsdon Best

As conducted the Maori of New Zealand, with accounts of various customs, rites, superstitions, &c., pertaining to war as practised and believed in by ancient Maori

Best's notes on war customs, practices and ceremonies of the Maori' were published as nine articles and supplementary notes in the Journal of the Polynesian Society between 1902 and 1906. In their entirety, they represent one of the most detailed studies of warfare as practised by Maori society. While research among Tuhoe forms the core of these `notes', there is reference to iwi throughout the country, constituting a wide-ranging primary account about Maori warfare before and shortly after the arrival of the sailing ship, the musket and the Bible.

Notes on the Art of War reproduces Best's original articles with limited editorial revisions and additions. The author considered the Maori art of war in both its spiritual and its material aspects, from the perspective of the battlefield as well as the training ground. So the range of topics considered is broader than might be imagined: as well as the origins and causes of war, the place of revenge, training and weapons handling, and the attack and the pursuit, the book sheds light on preparatory rites, signs and divination, clothing and food, women's roles, proverbs and expressions, modes of combat, the treatment of the enemy and the dead, and the introduction of firearms. Over 30 photographs and illustrations have been introduced to complement the text.
