Description
- An Illustrated History of No.1 Squadron , RNZAF 1930-1984.
''No.1 Squadron RNZAF had its beginnings at Hobonsville Airfield, Auckland in 1930. With the outbreak of WWII, the 3 active territorial squadrons, No.1 Auckland, No.2 Wellington and No.3 Christchurch, were merged into one unit and put into a wartime role with the new RNZAF Station Whenuapai as its base. The squadron's aircraft were Vickers Vincent & Vildebeest biplanes, and duties included anti-submarine and anti-raider patrols, along with convoy escort work. The obsolete biplanes were replaced by Lockheed Hudson light bombers and, later, by PV-1 Venturas. Disbanded in 1945, it re-emerged in 1948 - again as a territorial unit - and continued its activities until it was again disbanded in July 1957. August 1972 it was reformed as a transport and communications squadron, equipped with Bristol Freighters, replaced in 1976 by Hawker Siddeley Andovers. The unit continued its work until it was deactivated in December 1984.''
