J.M.Dent & Sons, London, 1957

Hardcover, 18.5x12cms, 370pp.

No. 987 in Everyman's Library (first published in EL in 1948).

With an Introduction by Frank Swinnerton.

A 1903 satirical novel (also described as a dark comedy) considered a masterpiece of Henry James' final period. It follows the European journey of an American, on behalf of his fiancee, in search of a young man named Chad who he seeks to bring back to the family business; however he encounters some unexpected complications and finds himself seduced by the sophisticated Parisian culture.

VG to VG+ book inside Fair DW. DW in green denoting this edition was a premium issue within the Everyman's Library (second only to the yellow wrapper volumes which are rare). DW is discoloured by sun at spine and top with foxing, chipped esp at spine where paper is very fragile due to sunning.

Book has slight bumping to spine ends and corners, some sunspotting along top edge, light solid block foxing at endpages but otherwise pristine. Nice clean bright boards, gold gift text to spine backstrip. Endpages decorated in attractive apricot as a variation to other Everyman's Library publications.
