Sailing to Freedom

Voldemar Veedam & Carl B. Wall

The story of the astonishing escape made by Estonian author and adventurer Voldemar Veedam (1912-83), with sixteen refugees, including women and children, in the 'Erma' a small leaky sailing boat, across the Atlantic to freedom in America. In 1945 Stalin had demanded that all Estonian nationals should return to their Soviet dominated homeland but Voldemar and his group decided to escape. They survived hunger, lack of supplies, howling Atlantic storms and contrary winds but after 128 days at sea they finally made it to their destination. This book has been described as 'more exciting than the Kon-Tiki expedition and represents a triumph of the human spirit in the face of oppression.
