The Maoris of New Zealand
(Original Peoples)
by:Graham Wiremu

The Maoris arrived in New Zealand about 1,200 years ago, travelling by canoe across the Pacific. For nearly 1,000 years, they lived their lives free from outside interference. The arrival of the Europeans in the eighteenth century brought struggles over land, culminating in the wars of the 1860s and 70s,

Since then, there has been a slow but steady integration of white New Zealanders and Maoris and today they live in relative harmony. Graham Wiremu, who is himself part Maori, explains how and why these developments have taken place. He also tells why, in spite of the progress, problems remain to be solved.
