This story is set in the 18th century in Cornwall, in the days of smugglers.
Paul and Joan Trelorne, aged 13, are twins, the children of Squire Trelorne.
'There on the headland stood the grim old ruin not far from Penrayne Castle itself. "Old Nat has it (said Paul) that one day an heir will return and claim the castle, though no Penrayne will ever live in peace or prosperity there until the Luck is found." Jean shook her curls..."I have heard our mother talk of this Luck, saying tis just like an egg of marble with strange writing on it".
Not long after this they find a man pinned down by a block of stone "Tis Black Nat" he (Paul) cried softly "Black Nat himself".
Black Nat is a well known smuggler who has escaped from Penzance Jail, and he persuades the children to help free him, and promises if it is ever in his power to serve them it will be done.
In chapter 2 they meet young Nicholas Penrayne who has come, with his mother, to try and find the Luck as his father is the heir, very ill, and they are desperately poor. Paul and Joan and Nicholas join together to search for the Luck and suffer many excitements and dangers.
