With an introduction by Augustine Birrell.

Charles Lamb, one of the best loved figures of English literature in the 19th century, contributed a large number of essays to 'London Magazine' under the pseudonym 'Elia' between 1820 and 1825. These were published as a book, with the 'Last Essays of Elia' published later. Both are included in this volume. He won many fans for his conversational and personable writing style. Over fifty essays are collected here, including, by way of example, 'The Two Races of Men' (borrowers and lenders), 'Valentine's Day', Witches and Other Night-Fears', 'The Praise of Chimney-Sweepers', 'A Dissertation Upon Roasted Pig', 'A Bachelor's Complaint Of the Behaviour of Married People', 'The Tombs in the Abbey', 'Confessions of a Drunkard' and 'Old China'.
