Bagatelles pour un massacre.
CELINE (Louis-Ferdinand).

Book Description: Paris, Ed Denoël, (1941).French language (never translated into English) 8vo (223 x 140 mm) 226 pp., Paperback. Wartime Edition (original edition 1937). Bagatelles pour un massacre is the second pamphlet by Louis-Ferdinand Celine, after Mea Culpa published in 1936. Written in the second half of the year 1937 Robert Denoël published Bagatelles pour un massacre in December 1937 (it sold 75000 copies), but in May 1939 the decree Marchandeau required the publisher to withdraw from sale the two pamphlets L’Ecole des Cadavres and Bagatelles pour un massacre. Robert Denoël reissued them twice during the war. The book was a best seller for the publisher, and Bagatelles pour un massacre, along with Les Decombres by Rebatet, was one of the titles that sold best under the occupation. I won’t go into details about the content but the rash decision Céline made to publish this pamphlet forced him to flee France after the Liberation and cost him 6 months prison in Denmark and some say his sanity. Lucette Destouches the writer's widow now aged over 100, still opposes any new edition of these books, respecting the wishes of Celine who did not want these texts republished after 1945.
