A rare 1931 first edition of Annie (Mrs. William) Garland Foster’s biography of Mohawk princess Emily Pauline Johnson.

"Emily Pauline Johnson (her adopted name was Tekahion-wake, meaning “double wampum”) was a poet born on the Six Nations Indian reserve near Brantford in 1861 who died in 1913. Johnson was the daughter of a Mohawk chief and an Englishwoman, and is best known for her poetry celebrating her Indian heritage. Her poetry was both critically acclaimed and popular during her lifetime. In the 1890s and the early 1900s, Johnson embarked on speaking tours across Canada, the United States, and Britain.

Annie Garland Foster’s connection to Johnson began after she attended a lecture on Johnson’s work and life. She was intrigued by the prominent Mohawk-Canadian poet and actress who had been prolific in life but died in poverty. In 1926, Annie began working on Johnson’s biography to the exclusion of all else, and in 1931 published 'The Mohawk Princess', which remained the standard biography of Johnson until 1965."
