Description:
Mediatization has emerged as a key concept to revisit and reframe old, yet fundamental questions about the role and influence of media in culture and society. In particular the theory of mediatization has proved fruitful for the analysis and discussion of how media spread to, become intertwined with, and influence other social institutions like politics, family, and religion.

This book presents a major contribution to the theoretical understanding and empirical analysis of the mediatization of culture and society. Drawing on recent advances in mediatization theory, the first chapter of the book presents a theoretical framework for understanding the increased interplay between media and other social institutions and phenomena. This is followed by five in-depth empirical studies of the role of media in cultural and social transformation: the changing nature of mediated politics; the development of new linguistic forms and social norms of language use; the decline of the church and emergence of new spiritual beliefs; the changing character of children s play and leisure life; the emergence of new forms of soft individualism.

Making use of a broad conception of the media as technologies and institutions that extend human communication in time, space and semiotic modality, this book includes consideration of interpersonal, network and mass communication.
