The Interpersonal Communication Book by Joseph A. DeVito. This is the eleventh edition, published in 2007 - which is really similar to the twelfth edition in my experience.

Covers the preliminaries (culture, the self, perception, listening), messages (verbal and nonverbal, conversation) as well as interpersonal relationship (growth and deterioration, friendship, love, family and workplace, conflict and power).

When I was studying, this was a required textbook for a compulsary Communication Studies paper - but outside of university this book is also WONDERFUL for more effective communication, both at home and in the workplace. I also lent the book to my mum, who found it incredibly useful in improving her communication skills in her workplace.

It's a brilliant read, and definitely not overly academic but really rather easy to digest.
